Obituary

On January 29, 2008, Angels came and escorted our beloved mother, grandmother and dear friend to heaven. Having been at home under Hospice care for a month, she was prepared for her journey and her passing was peaceful. She was born on September 12, 1923 to Abbie and Oran Davenport in Midnight, Mississippi. In 1939, she married John Edward Sumrall and together they had five children. She moved to Lompoc, California from Jackson, Mississippi in 1966.

Louise was completely selfless and always put the needs of others before her own needs. She was the best mother and grandmother anyone could ever have and was affectionately known as "Mammie" to her grandchildren and many others who knew and loved her. She was a lifelong homemaker and was a talented and passionate cook. Throughout her lifetime, she was also an expert seamstress, quilter, gardener, and an avid reader. She enjoyed working challenging crossword puzzles, watching QVC and the Food Channel on TV and searching for new recipes. During her younger years, she made soft sculptured dolls and donated them to handicapped children. She loved birds and at one time, raised cockatiels. She was involved in many community activities over the years including the LCLC (Lompoc Community Labor Coalition) and Flower Festival activities. Her greatest joys in life came from her family, friends and dear neighbors. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

Louise is survived by her children: Sons - John (Beverly) Sumrall of Jackson, Mississippi, James (Mary) Sumrall of Benton, Mississippi, Dean (Elaine) Sumrall of Oxnard, California and daughters Betty (Tom) Williams of Lompoc, California and Cindy Hill of Pearl, Mississippi, brother John Frank (Wilma) Davenport of Flippin, Arkansas, 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and many, many friends whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John Edward Sumrall, Jackson, Mississippi; grandsons Von Sumrall, Jackson, Mississippi and Kevin Chinn, Lompoc, California; brother, George Davenport and sister Sue Bell Davenport, all of Mississippi.

A memorial service will be held at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary, 123 North "A" Street, Lompoc, California on Friday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at the Lompoc Elks Lodge, 905 East Ocean Avenue, Lompoc, CA.

Louise's wishes were that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either of the two organizations listed below or the charity of your choice.
Marian Hospice. 506 East Plaza Drive, Santa Maria, CA 93454
American Cancer Society, 604 East Ocean Avenue, Lompoc, CA
