Alberta Esther Godet was born in 1917 at a Santa Rosa Road family farmhouse and passed on August 26, 2011, at the age of 93. Alberta's historical, pioneering family the Hollisters, helped settle Santa Barbara County. Her parents, Albert and Esther Hollister, and sisters Anna and Louisa moved into Lompoc when Alberta was 16. She graduated from Lompoc High School in 1935. She remained in Lompoc the majority of her life, marrying her husband of 62 years, Harry Godet, a painting contractor, who predeceased her in 1998. Without children of their own, the Godets helped raise Alberta's nephews, Dan and Larry Kaehn.
Alberta became known by her nickname "Auntie Bert" to everyone. During World War II she began working for the United States Postal Service for a period of 10 years. Later as a housewife, she enjoyed reading, writing letters, needlework, cooking and visiting. Alberta and Harry frequently took vacations in the RV, extensively traveling throughout the United States visiting relatives, friends, national parks, and scenic places of the "Old West." One of her favorite recipes reached a Long Island, New York, restaurant and was called "Auntie Bert's Lemon Cake."
Alberta affected many with her genuine character. She frequently visited with senior and young friends, showering them with homemade goods. She loved to converse with others, lending an ear, and never hesitating to give advice freely---sometime with blunt honesty. Visitors from near and far often frequented her charming yellow ranch home specked with flowers where they were treated like family. She amazed others by her sharp recollections of line, including endless descriptive tales of Lompoc history.
Alberta is survived by her nephew Larry Kaehn and his wife Ann; their children, Loren Kaehn and his wife Linsey and their son Jackson of Boise, Idaho; Sarah Kaehn of Santa Barbara, Larissa Kaehn of Hollywood, and Eric Kaehn of Costa Mesa. She is also survived by a grandniece Mara Kaehn and her Husband Max from San Jose, CA.
There will be no funeral service upon Alberta's request. A celebration of her life will take place in the Fall and will be announced at a later date. Contributions may be made in memory of Alberta Godet to the Lompoc Historical Society.
