Obituary

After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Alfred Lewis Horton III (aka Gator), of Lompoc, CA passed away Thursday, November 19, 2015, at the young age of 56.

Al was born February 21, 1959, to Alfred and Phyllis Horton in New Haven, Connecticut. He was raised in Tipp City, Ohio and graduated from Tippecanoe High School in 1977. Anyone who knew him knows that he loved serving his country throughout his military career. He joined the Air Force in 1981, and was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base. During his years of service, he was stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base and retired as a SMSgt in 2004, at Edwards Air Force Base. He then returned to Vandenberg Air Force Base and finished out his career as a civilian employee with 576 FLTS.

One of Al's greatest passions was being a volunteer for Special Olympics. Not only was he head of security for 20 years, but he also became friends with many of the athletes and looked forward to watching them succeed year after year. He is a member of the Non Commissioned Officers Association (NCOA), Pacific Surf Chapta 62 and recognized as a Knight, Order of Excalibur. He was also a member of the American Legion post 125 in Lompoc, CA. In his spare time Al loved spending time with family, friends, and camping (usually accompanied by a Miller Lite).

Al is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara Horton; his son Dustin (Noemi) Mitzel of San Diego; daughter Amber (Anthony) Kodad of San Diego; his grandchildren Nicholas and Elena; his mother Phyllis Horton, and his sister Susan Ogletree. He was preceded in death by his sister Abby Hazen.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015, from 4 to 7 pm at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary for those who wish to attend. The memorial service will be held at VAFB Chapel #1 on December 4, 2015 at 11am, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life at Cocheo Park (The NCOA Way).
