Alfred Maes of Lompoc died Monday, October 14, 2013, at the age of 77. Alfred was born May 23, 1936, in Pecos, New Mexico to Martin and Martina Maes. After high school, he proudly left New Mexico to travel the world with the United States military. Alfred had a distinguished 26-year career in the United States Air Force. He spent his military career in the Communications field. His assignments ranged from Newfoundland, Canada, Alletiuan Islands, Alaska, Japan, Oxnard Air Force base, California, Norton Air Force base, California, Clark Air Base, Philippines and his final assignment was Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. It was during one of several assignments at Clark Air Base, Philippines that he met his wife of 49 years, Florinda Maes. They were blessed with 2 sons, Darrell Maes and Alfred Joseph Maes Jr. Alfred has been a resident of Lompoc since 1980. He was an active member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Alfred loved going to church. He was very passionate about sending clothes and toys to the Philippines to help those less fortunate than himself. Alfred and Florinda were known to visit garage sales in the Lompoc area buying things that they could send to the Philippines.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Florinda Maes, his son Darrell Maes and his wife, Christine and grandchildren, Tim, Brandon and Lisa, his son Alfred Joseph Maes Jr. (Joe) and grandson, Jordan. He is also survived by his aunts Mary Romero and Jane Maes as well as many cousins.
The memorial service will be on Friday, October 18, 2013, at 10 am at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Lompoc (Mission Hills), California. Cremation will be followed by internment in the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
