Matilda Alice Barnes
1918 – 2009
Alice Barnes of Lompoc died Monday, April 6, 2009, at the age of 91.
Alice was born February 5, 1918, to Homer and Sylvia Phillips in Young America, Indiana. As one of seven children Alice was raised in South Bend and Kokomo. She completed her education by graduating from high school and attending the city college in Kokomo.
Alice worked as a seamstress for Reliance and as a nail sorter with Continental Steel Mill in Kokomo, but her greatest source of pride and joy was as a homemaker and the mother of triplets.
Alice was very creative. She enjoyed ceramics and knitting using her talents to make lap blankets for the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
A resident of Lompoc since 1983, Alice was a member of First Christian Church and enjoyed playing Bingo at the Valley of the Flowers Half Century Club and spending time at the Senior Center.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Barnes in 1961 and her son Leon in 2000. She is survived by her sons Lindsay Barnes of Kokomo and Lewis Barnes of Lompoc, her daughter-in-law Winifred Barnes of Kokomo, five grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, her sister Polly Crawford of Saint Petersburg, Florida, and her brother Walter Phillips of Galveston, Indiana.
The visitation will be on Saturday, April 11, from noon to 4 pm at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. The funeral service will be in Kokomo, with the interment in the Memorial Park Cemetery.
