Dr. Harshaw, the first black female Air Force MSgt. to retire with 30 years of service died Monday October 28, 2013 at her home in Lompoc, CA. She was 98 years old. The death was confirmed by her nephew, Franklin E. Withrow.

The daughter of Amanda and Hugh Harshaw, she was one of 13 children. She is survived by one sister, Amanda Violet Sanders of Shelby, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dr. Harshaw a long time resident of Lompoc, CA was born in Lawndale, NC. She was a 1940 graduate of the Tuskegee Institute and earned a Ph.d. in Human Behavior from the United States International University at San Diego, CA.

In 1943 at the height of WWII, Dr. Harshaw left her teaching position and enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corp (WAAC). Her profile is included in HERSTORIES-A tribute to African American Women who served in the US Military Service during World War II, complied by Gladys Carter. She is featured in "Voices of World War II: A Lompoc Veterans History Project." A 1991 article by John Bowman, in the Ventura Press was instrumental in her inclusion on the US Women's Military Service Museum's website. She received numerous awards and much recognition for her overall outstanding performances contributions and accomplishments as a Radiology Technician. She retired from the United States Air Force in 1973. After her military retirement she taught in the Lompoc Unified School district for 23 years.

Between teaching assignments she travelled extensively. At age 72 she ventured around-the-world on a four months cruise by German Freighter. She described it as "Wonderful!" She also enjoyed bowling with the Grey Panthers.

In 2007, Dr. Harshaw was presented with a Congressional Gold Medal for her work with the Tuskegee Airmen.

Dr. Harshaw's life will be celebrated at 1pm on Friday, November 8, 2013 at the Starbuck – Lind Mortuary Chapel 123 North A Street, Lompoc, CA 93436. Viewing will start at 11:30am.
