IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alyce C.
Martin
January 18, 1927 – April 30, 2021
Alyce Christine Martin passed away on April 30, 2021, in Santa Barbara, California. She was born on January 18, 1927, in Hixson, Tennessee, to Roy and Melvina (Cox) O'Neal.
Alyce's family moved to California when she was two years old. Following her graduation from Lompoc High School, class of 1945, she was secretary to attorney Carl Kappler for several years. She was a Rodeo queen candidate, sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, helped community concert membership drives, and was active in Junior Alpha Club.
Alyce married Perry Martin in 1950, and they had five children, whom she had the "luxury" of staying home with while Perry rose to the level of Postmaster at the Lompoc Post Office. As a family, they did a lot of camping, beach, and mountain activities. After their children were grown, she and Perry enjoyed traveling in their RV, driving across the country to the East Coast several times and venturing up to Canada and down to Baja, California.
Her time at home allowed her to raise her family and participate in making the community a better place. She was involved in literary and craft groups, fundraising, fashion shows and held many offices on the board of directors of the Alpha Literary and Improvement Club, including president. She was a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs for 60 years. She was proud to live in Lompoc and had a passion for improving the city. She served on the Senior Commission and supported the art culture in Lompoc. She was a member of the Lompoc Museum Associates, Lompoc Historical Society and enjoyed attending many community concerts as a season ticket holder for four of the local organizations. She was an avid gardener, spending hours in her greenhouse and yard. She was a member of the Botanic and Horticulture Society for many years, passing her love and appreciation of plants on to her family and friends. She treasured dear friendships made through these activities. She loved people, was generous with her time and energy, and was quoted as saying, "In fact, that's what this whole thing is all about." She was an inspiration to her family and friends. Her lifelong commitment to community involvement and pride in the City of Lompoc was an example of how all can lead a life of community service.
Alyce had a vibrant, positive, and witty spirit, always packing so much into life. She often attended multiple community engagements (meetings, luncheons, commissions, events, and walking groups) all in one day. These are just some of her many interests. She always had an upbeat attitude, ready smile, and remained active and interested in the community. She enjoyed teaching her grandchildren to enjoy life. Alyce was a loving and happy lady who will be dearly missed.
Alyce was preceded in death by her Father Roy, Mother Melvina, Stepfather David Winans, and Husband Perry. She is survived by her five children, Jeffrey (Michelle) of Hansen, Idaho, Timothy (Cindy) of Orcutt, California, Julie (Pat) Casarez of Lompoc, California, Gregory (Sara) of Lompoc, California, and Andrew (Georgia) of Driftwood, Texas. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Due to the pandemic, the family held a private celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lompoc Theatre Project or a charity of your choice.
