Andrew Davis, Jr. passed form this Earth and went to be with the Lord on March 15, 2013. He will be remembered as a great helpful, talented, and loving man, adored by family and friends.
Andrew was born July 9th, 1928 in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, to Andrew Davis, Sr. and Susie Washington. While growing up in Mississippi, he worked during the summers farming. An avid sports enthusiast, he played baseball and basketball during school years. While still a pre-teen, a farm foreman took notice of Andrew's interest in tractors and farm machinery. With the encouragement and support of the foreman, the young apprentice began to learn the use and maintenance of motorized vehicles and equipment—skills that were enhanced later during his military service career.
When Andrew was 13 years old, his mother died and he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana to live with a maternal relative, who raised him as her son. He worked as a cook, bus driver, and on the railroads before joining the Air Force in 1952.
Andrew served in the Air Force for 28 years. During his Air Force career, he was stationed at bases throughout the United States and Overseas. Bases of assignment included Parks AFB (outside of Oakland, Ca.); Amarillo AFB, Texas; Sioux City AFB, Iowa; Sonderstrom AB, Greenland; Richards-Gebaur AFB Missouri; Cigli AB, Turkey; Tuy Hoa AB (in the Republic of Vietnam); Pope AFB in North Carolina; Lockburne AFB, Ohio; Yokota AB, Japan; and Vandenberg AFB, Ca., at which he retired effective December 1, 1980.
After retiring from the Air Force, Andrew worked for Martin Marietta Corp (now Lockheed Martin), and also for Federal civil service in the Transportation Squadron on Vandenberg AFB.
Andrew was an enthusiastic hobbyist. His many hobbies, included fishing, stamp and coin-collection, macramé, landscaping, music, and furniture refinishing among many others. Andrew was a real friend to many over the years. He was a loving, caring man who was always available, and went the extra mile to help others. He was known throughout the community for his good humor; generosity; his upbeat, cheerful nature; and his hands-on know-how.
Andrew is survived by his wife of 51 years, Fredericka; daughter Andra McCoy(Doctor Jeff) of Nashville, Tennessee; son Andrew Davis, III of San Luis Obispo, CA; granddaughter Tammi Mc Coy of Aurora, Colorado; grandson Vaughan McCoy, of Nashville, Tennessee, sister Susie B Moore of Indianapolis, Indiana, and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held for Andrew at Trinity Church of the Nazarene, 500 E. North Avenue, Lompoc, California, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday April 6, 2013. A reception will follow immediately after the service at the Church's Community Life Center.
