Obituary

Andrew Paul Mascsak, Sr., 79, of Lompoc passed away at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 21, 2012.
Andy was born February 19, 1932 in Toledo, Ohio to Andrew J. and Helen A. Mascsak, Jr. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1950. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1961. While serving in the Air Force, he graduated from Century College of Medical Technology in Chicago as a Radiological Technician which led him to his career path.

Andy married his wife Barbara in 1953 and shortly after that they were stationed at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota, where their daughters Kathy and Jeanne were born. In 1958 they were transferred to Vandenberg AFB where their daughter Pat and son Andy were born.

Andy and Barbara moved to Lompoc in 1960 and began making many lifetime friends and memories.
He worked at Lompoc Hospital as the Manager of Radiology for 32 years. When he came to work at the hospital, X-Ray was a one room department. He was proud to be part of the many technological advances at the hospital as it grew. Andy had great respect for the all of the people he worked with at the hospital and made many lifelong friends there.

Andy was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus for 47 years and held many leadership positions including Past Grand Knight, Former District Deputy, and Past Faithful Navigator.

He had a lot of interests and hobbies. He was an Amateur Radio Operator. He enjoyed fishing, building model airplanes, and making paper dolls for his grandchildren. Andy especially enjoyed his plastic craft and used his creative mind to make all sorts of wonderful cans, boxes, and tissue holders, which he gave to people as keepsakes.
Andy enjoyed a good joke and had a great sense of humor. He was quite the diplomat and had a gentle way with people, which made him very special…our gentle giant. He thoroughly enjoyed his family and especially his grand and great-grandchildren and all the four-legged extended members of the family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and sister, Helen. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara, his children, Kathy Mascsak Greaves, (Oxnard), Jeanne Broughton and husband William (Dayton, NV), Pat Mascsak (Fremont), Andy Mascsak, Jr. and wife Marilyn (Fremont), four wonderful grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, his sister Elizabeth Mascsak, and numerous extended family.

Andy wanted to make sure that everyone knew how much he appreciated all the people that have been there for him during this past year, especially members of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters, Neighbors and friends, Marion Home Care and Hospice, Dr. Bailey, and the staff at Valley Medical Group, Dr. Sheriff, the staff at Lompoc Valley Medical Center, the many other doctors that cared for him, and especially his caregivers Reese and Angie. You all meant so much to him.

A vigil and rosary will be held on Thursday, January 26, at 7 p.m. at La Purisima Catholic Church, 213 West Olive Ave. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at La Purisima Catholic church on Friday, January 27th at 10 a.m., followed by burial services at Evergreen Cemetery with reception immediately following. Andy wanted everyone to wear joyful colors to celebrate his life.
