Anna Gloria (Mendez) Smith

Anna Gloria Smith passed away unexpectedly in Lompoc on July 21.

She was born Dec. 22, 1927 in Lompoc, the sixth of Joaquin and Isabell Mendez' seven children. She graduated from Lompoc Union High School in 1947. She met her husband Floyd Smith at a school dance and they were married in 1948 at La Purisima Catholic Church.

They raised their three daughters on Cojo Ranch near Lompoc, where Floyd was employed by the Bixby Ranch Company. They retired to their Lompoc home in 1978. Anna worked as a school and city bus driver in Lompoc, as well as served as a park ranger at Jalama Beach Park. Anna enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, crocheting and being with her family.

Anna is survived by her daughters Joyce (Randy) Brown of Lompoc, Paula (Larry) Behling of Middleton, Wisconsin, son-in-law Don Ayres of Lompoc, her grandchildren, Michael (Jen) O'Sullivan of Kailua, Hawaii, Nathan (Leona) O'Sullivan of Waipahu, Hawaii, Joel Symons of Milwaukee, and Jeff Brown, Vicki (Sean) Young and Sean Ayres of Lompoc, and great-granddaughter Brooke Ann Cobb-O'Sullivan of Waipahu, Hawaii. She is also survived by her brother Andrew Mendez of Buellton and sister Adelina Silva of Santa Maria.

Anna is preceded in death by her husband Floyd, son Charles Smith, daughter Connie Ayres, brothers Bob, George and Joe Mendez, and sister Mary Valla.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, at La Purisima Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
