Armando "Joe" Bonifacio Dominguez, Jr., died on Thursday, October 23, 2008, in Lompoc, California, at the age of 85.
Armando was born on May 14, 1923, in Orange, California, to Constance and Armando Dominguez, Sr. He was raised and educated in Chino, California. He played football for Chaffey College in Ontario, California, prior to joining the United States Air Force. Armando served as an Aviation Technician and was part of flight crews stationed in Hawaii at Hickam AFB, in Florida, and in Lompoc at Vandenberg AFB. He attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant before retiring after 29 years of service to his country. He was last stationed at Vandenberg AFB prior to retiring from the USAF in 1973. Armando worked for the United States Postal Service in Lompoc for the last ten years prior to retiring.
Armando enjoyed socializing with his friends and family. He was a regular member of La Purisima Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a huge baseball fan and was especially proud of his son, Jose Dominguez, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and would eventually reach AAA level. He loved spending time with his three grandchildren, Chloe Brown (daughter of Elena Hoelscher) of Titusville, Florida, Kelly Dominguez of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Matthew Dominguez of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Armando is survived by his children, Judy Dominguez of Lompoc, California, Nieves Dominguez of Tampa, Florida, Elena and husband Mark Hoelscher of Titusville, Florida, and Jose and wife Terry Dominguez of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Grace Lopez, Henry Dominguez, Frances Prieto, Henrietta Dominguez, Connie Stephens, and Rosie Estrella, all of San Bernardino County, California. Armando was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Juanita, in 2004. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Margie Rico.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary, with a vigil service at 7 pm. The funeral mass will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2008, at 10 am at La Purisima Catholic Church with interment following at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
