Barbara M. Starcher
October 7, 1931 - May 21, 2024
With sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of Barbara M. Starcher, who went home on May 21, 2024, to her heavenly father and eternal companion, Lyle. Barbara M. Costa (Starcher) was born to Larry and Mary Vance Costa on October 7, 1931. She was the second of seven children, with the last child being her only brother.
Barbara's life was filled with the joy of singing, a talent that graced the airwaves, town dances, and numerous church events. It was during one of these moments that she met her beloved husband, Lyle. Their union on June 22, 1949, in Lompoc, California, marked the beginning of a life dedicated to raising their four children and serving their church and community.
Barbara loved children, not only her own but any child who came into her life. She was known as Dr. Barbara during and even after her time working as a nurse with Dr. Nygren until they both retired after 40 years of service. Her home was always full of family or neighborhood children. Barbara spent the last few years living with her granddaughter Emily and her Family, helping Emily run her daycare. She was grandma and great grandma to so many little ones throughout the years. In addition to her Family, Barbara loved to crochet beanies for the new babies at Lompoc Hospital; she loved camping with her sisters, gardening, singing, and cooking with our Family for holidays and get-togethers.
Barbara's faith was a cornerstone of her life as a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her numerous callings were a testament to her love for serving others and her deep personal relationship with her heavenly father. Her unwavering faith and exemplary life served as a guiding light for her Family and friends.
She is survived by her daughters Carol Starcher of Arroyo Grande and Marilyn (Gary) Silbaugh, and son Michael (Laura) of Lompoc, her brother David ( Fran ) Costa of Simi Valley, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Barbara had thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 63 years, son Larry, grandsons Gavin and Damien, and her sisters Margaret, Mary, Betty, Carolyn, and Karen. She is also preceded in death by great and great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 1. 2024, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 212 East Central Ave., at 10:00 am.
The Family wishes to thank the Skilled Rehab staff and Hospice care for the love and kindness shown to her and her Family during this time and to all the Family and friends for their thoughts and prayers.
