Memorial services for Barry J. Gustafson, 77, of Lompoc will be 11:00 a.m Thursday, April 12, 2012 at the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary with Pastor Clete Doyal of the First Christian Church of Santa Maria officiating. Private inurnment will be at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.

Barry was born February 15, 1935 in Loma Linda, California to Arthur and Florence Olson Gustafson. He was raised and attended local schools in the Lake Elsinore area and graduated from Poly High in Riverside. Barry served in the United States Air Force and later finished his studies that earned a bachelor of science in engineering at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. He started his career and worked for Goldstone Tracking in Barstow, California for several years and where he learned an appreciation and fondness of the desert. Barry went on to work for the engineering department in the city of Riverside. In 1971, he moved to Lompoc with his family and worked for the City of Lompoc's engineering department. He later founded Gustafson Engineering in Lompoc where he retired after several years.

Barry loved camping and had a great interest in the desert life and it's natural beauty and landscape. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed following his children and grandchildren and their sporting activities. He especially was interested in track and field events.

He died Sunday, April 8, 2012 in Lompoc.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Kay Gustafson of Lompoc; daughter, Kristen Dimock of Lompoc; sons, Kevin Gustafson of San Antonio, Texas and Kurt Gustafson of Graham, Washington; brother, Dale Gustafson of Newport, Rhode Island; grandchildren, Kayla, Kolbe, Landon, Donovan, Blaine, Hailee, and Hannah; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
