Obituary

Basil Dogan Brown passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family on June 7, 2012. He was born on October 31, 1931 and raised in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from Proviso East High School in 1950, Basil proudly served in the US Navy and USAF for 26 years as a Laboratory Technician. Basil and his wife June met in high school and dreamed of exploring the world. Throughout his military career, Basil, June, and his family travelled extensively throughout the United States and lived abroad. With an eye on retirement, Basil and June chose Vandenberg Air Force Base as their final assignment in 1970, and he resided in the Lompoc Valley until his death.

He will forever be remembered by his devoted wife June; his beloved children Basil, Michael, Karen (Harris), Wayne, Stephen (Tebeau), and Jeffrey; grandchildren Tyler, Dustin, Zachrey, Junea, Kara (Harris) and Nicholas; the Browning family of Chicago and friends. He was predeceased by his father Basil, mother Lucille, and sister Helen Brooks.

In addition to his family, Basil's primary passions were sports, music, and film. He was a swimmer in high school, he coached sports, and participated in sports for a majority of his life. At Vandenberg Bowling alley he was known as the "Brown Bomber" and he enjoyed golf during his retirement. He was an avid fan of Miles Davis, modern jazz, and western movies.

Basil touched the lives of many people with his smile, warm disposition, and his optimistic outlook on life. He fought a courageous battle against cancer. The Brown family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Mark Abate and the Oncology staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, his rehabilitation treatment at Mission Terrace, the prompt and professional services he received at Lompoc Valley Hospital, and the Visiting Nurses Service of Santa Ynez.

There will be an interment on Friday, June 22 at the Lompoc Cemetery. On Saturday, June 23 there will be a celebration of his life at the Brown home. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society of Santa Barbara.
