Bernard Forjes Sapalaran, 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 9, 2010, at his daughter's residence in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rosa Quintanilla Sapalaran; his daughter, Velma Sapalaran Chan and her husband, Francis Chan; granddaughters, Jacqueline and Natalie; and grandson, Marcus.
Bernard was a Philippine Scout during World War II. Subsequently, Bernard served as a fireman in the U.S. Civil Service in Anderson Air Force Base, Guam and Vandenberg Air Force Base, California for 31 years. Bernard enjoyed fishing and family/friend gatherings. Bernard was also a passionate reader, and spent a lot of time reading novels, newspapers and history related books. Above all, Bernard was always kind and caring toward his family and friends. Bernard, generally known as "Bernie" or "Sap" or "Uncle Bernard", always had a smile on his face and welcomed everyone. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
A viewing service will be held on Sunday, May 16th at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at Queen of Angels Catholic Church on Monday, May 17th at 9:30 AM followed by a burial ceremony at the Lompoc Cemetery District.
