Beloved mother, wife, and librarian, Bertha Ella Spooner was born on February 12, 1927, in Watertown, New York, and passed away peacefully in her home in Lompoc on April 14, 2019, at the age of 93 years old.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents Robert Roy Bevens of Long Point, Ontario, Canada, and Dora Elida Littlefield of Town of Orleans, New York; sister, Doris Narrow of Evans Mills, New York; brothers Carl Erwin Bevens and Robert Roy Bevens, Jr., both of Watertown, New York; husband, John R. Spooner, Sr. of Evans Mills, New York; and son, Andrew Spooner.

Bertha is survived by sister Marion Brimmer and brother John Bevens; and loving children, John R. Spooner, Jr., and fiancée LaDonna Johnson, and Rodney Spooner and wife Susan; grandsons John R. Spooner, III, and fiancée Hailey Seaton, and Michael Spooner and wife Samantha; granddaughter Katherine; and great-grandchildren Emma, Ella, and Fayden.

Bertha was raised on her family's dairy farm near Evans Mills, New York. She married John R. Spooner, Sr., on April 18, 1948, and faithfully served as a devoted military wife for 22 years while staying at home to raise three sons. The family moved to Lompoc, California, in 1962. Bertha loved books, and from 1971 to 1995 she worked for the Lompoc Unified School District at the Clarence Ruth Elementary School as a librarian. Upon her retirement, the Clarence Ruth School honored her by naming their library "Spooner Library."

Bertha loved flowers and gardening. She raised a family of ducks that "flew south for the winter." She also raised geese . . . one of which laid a "golden egg."

Bertha loved reading, knitting, puzzles, and Abraham Lincoln was her "Elvis," but most of all, her first love was being a loving and devoted wife and mother.

A memorial service is scheduled Tuesday, April 23, 2019, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary, 123 North A Street, Lompoc, California 93436.
