Bertha Reyes Velasquez, a longtime resident of Lompoc, California for the last sixty years, passed away on January 21, 2022 at the age of 90 from complications due to COVID-19. She was born August 1931 in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and came to the United States in 1955 when she married her husband, Gerardo Reyes, who predeceased her in 1974. She is survived by their five children—Jerry, Albert, Sandra, Fabian, and Herlinda—and succeeding generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Eva, Angie, and Belen.
After becoming widowed in 1974, Bertha began work in the packaging industry where she was active in the food manufacturers labor union. Bertha enjoyed cooking traditional Mexican dishes and spending time with her family. She was a devout Catholic. She often looked forward to local festivities such as the Lompoc Flower Festival and La Purisma Mission Fiesta.
In her later years, Bertha was a resident of the Lompoc Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she received excellent care from a devoted staff who affectionately referred to her as "Bertie." Bertha's remains will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Gerardo, in a private family ceremony.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary, 123 North A Street, Lompoc, CA.
