Betty M. Gage
1915 - 2006
Betty Murtaugh Gage was born September 18, 1915 to Matthew and Bessie Senour Murtaugh in Athabaska, Alberta, Canada. The first of four children, she moved to Northern Indiana when she was a few years old. Betty had two brothers; Robert and Jim and a sister; Catherine who were born in Northern Indiana.
Betty graduated from Warsaw (Indiana) High School in 1934 after which she attended Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana. She also attended Hanover College in Madison, Indiana. She belonged to Phi Mu Sorority and graduated with a degree in elementary education from Indiana University. She taught school extensively in Warsaw, Indiana; Farmington, New Mexico; Tucson, Arizona and El Paso, Texas.
She married Arthur Willard Gage in 1954 who predeceased her. Following Arthur's passing, Betty moved to Santa Barbara in 1978. She moved to The Lodge of Lompoc in 2005.
She is survived by a sister, Dr Catherine Murtaugh Childs of Santa Barbara. Two step daughters, Sandy (Mrs. Jim) Peterson and Nancy (Mrs. David) Page, both of Indianapolis; a nephew Steve Childs and family of Lompoc, another nephew, Dr. Jim Murtaugh and family of Bend, Oregon, two nieces Ms. Beverly Collins of Santa Barbara and Mrs. Nancy Shaw of Roger, Arkansas.
Betty was a member of the La Purisma Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution located in Lompoc. She was a worthy matron of her chapter of Order of the Eastern Star in Warsaw, Indiana and a member of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Colonists of Santa Barbara.
Betty possessed a sweet spirit and enjoyed being with her family and those who were a part of the various organizations of which she was a member. Even near the end of her life she showed her heart of appreciation for those who provided care and assistance to her.
Memorial services will be held at Lompoc Foursquare Church, 125 North C Street in Lompoc on Wednesday, November 8, at 2:00 PM. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in El Paso, Texas. The arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary
