Obituary

Long-time Lompoc resident Betty "Tommie" Thomas, 84, passed away May 13, 2008 with loved ones by her side. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 17 at 1:00 pm at the Lompoc Grange, 435 North G Street.

Mom was born Betty Lou Skelton on February 14, 1924 in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Edgar and Katherine. She spent her youth helping her dad on the family dairy farm. After completing nurses' training in Wichita, Kansas, she and two girlfriends headed west. Mom met her husband-to-be, Truman E. Thomas, on the advice of a young patient, Jerry Lang (Dad's four-year-old nephew). After a whirlwind motorcycle courtship, Mom and Dad married on January 16, 1948 and settled in Lompoc soon after.

Mom shared her compassion and common-sense approach to life as a Registered Nurse at Lompoc Hospital, followed by a stint as an RN for Doctors Dugrae and Seeds and a ten-year run as an industrial nurse for Lockheed on VAFB. In 1989, Mom completed her professional career back where she started, as an RN at Lompoc Hospital.

Mom and Dad made many lasting friends through their involvement with the square dance community and made more friends as they traveled extensively across the country during their retirement years. After losing Dad in 1993, Mom continued to travel with her daughter, Patricia. Mom enjoyed the sights of our wonderful country and "pulling handles" at casinos along the way .

Mom is survived by her daughter, Kathy and husband, Randy Blythe, of San Miguel; daughter, Patricia Thomas, of Tehachapi; and, son, Buck Thomas and wife, Debbie, of Camarillo. She was very proud of her grandchildren: Brant and Emily Blythe, Amber Blythe, Jamie (Thomas) and Ben Lahr, and Brandon Thomas. More recently, she enjoyed her great-grandsons, Elijah and Caleb Blythe. Betty is also survived by her sister, Marion Montalto, sisters-in-law, Wanda Skelton, Lennie Kosier and Faye Lang, as well as numerous nieces and nephews (including her first boyfriend, nephew, Jerry Lang). Lastly, Mom is survived by her constant companion, Petie, the little dog that she adored.

Mom would have preferred that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., Lompoc District Hospital, or New Tribes Missions.
