Billie J.
Powers
March 8, 1932 – April 21, 2026
Billie J. Powers passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 8, 1932, in Pulaski, Tennessee, to Edd Lee Powers and Kate Elizabeth Tarpley.
At just 17 years old, Billie enlisted in the United States Army in 1949. He proudly served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. During his time in service, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the National Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Service Stars. While stationed at Camp Cooke Army Base, Billie met the love of his life, Dorothy, with whom he shared an incredible 74 years of marriage.
Together, Billie and Dorothy built a beautiful life centered around love, family, and devotion. They welcomed their first son, Billie Dean, in 1953, followed by their second son, Mark, in 1958. In 1980, they lovingly adopted their granddaughter, Melissa, completing their family in a special and meaningful way.
Billie was a dedicated and hardworking man. He served his community as a Lompoc police officer and a school bus driver for the Lompoc Unified School District. He went on to work as a machinist at Johns-Manville, where he spent 37 years before retiring in 1997.
Billie lived life fully and joyfully. He loved fishing and camping—especially at Jalama Beach—barbecuing, and taking road trips. He had a wonderful sense of humor, always ready with a joke, and a touch of sarcasm that brought laughter to every room he entered. He was truly one of a kind—witty, unforgettable, and deeply loved by all who knew him.
Above all, Billie cherished his role as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was his greatest pride and joy, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and lasting memories.
Billie was preceded in death by his parents, Edd and Kate Powers; his brother, Lowell Powers; and his great-grandson, Anthony Grimes.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Powers; his children, Billie (Lyn) Powers, Mark Powers, and Melissa (Jared) Garife; and his cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren: Michael (Jolene) Powers, Joseph Powers, Nathalia Powell, Madisyn (Branden) Peterson, Jalen Powers, and Myla, Monroe, and Miahna Peterson.
Billie will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A service in honor of Billie will be held on June 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Lompoc Cemetery (600 S C St., Lompoc), followed by a celebration of life at Events Mission Valley (138 N B St., Lompoc)
