Camerino Diaz, 87, beloved husband, father, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Lompoc on April 10, 2012. Camy was born on August 12, 1924, in South San Francisco. He spent his childhood in Lompoc until graduating from Lompoc High, when he entered the Army. He fought in World War II from 1943 until he was honorably discharged in 1946. As a cannoneer, he was awarded several medals. He fought in France and Germany in the 217th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. After the war, Camy returned to Lompoc, worked at Johns-Mansville for several years, then worked as a construction plumber with R.P. Richards and Dale Smith, until he retired in 1986.
As a loving husband, Camy was married to Esperanza for 50 years. As devoted father to his daughter Anita, he was an active booster member of his daughter's softball team. He loved to barbecue for his 5 siblings and their families, go fishing, and spend time at the American Legion Post 211, in which he was a life member. He was also a long-time member of the VFW. He was well-known in town, wearing his Stetson hat, offering a hand to others.
Survivors include his wife Esperanza "Espie", of Lompoc, and his daughter Anita, of Santa Barbara. He is also survived by his brother, Ed Diaz, of Denison, Texas, three sisters: Connie Rojas (Rudy), Josie Martinez, and Rosie Martinez, all of Lompoc, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Gavina Diaz, who passed away in 1982, his father Ramon Diaz, who passed away in 1976, and his brother Raymond Diaz, in 2010.
In honor of Camy, a visitation will be held Sunday, April 15th from 4-8pm at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary and Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6pm with Deacon Paul Nicastro of La Purisima Catholic Church presiding. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 17th at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery with Deacon Rich Stalder also of La Purisima Catholic Church presiding. Military honors will rendered by the United States Army.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 211, Wm. "Bill" Proud Unit, 630 North H Street, Lompoc 93436.
