IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Ernest
O'Cairns
September 14, 1930 – February 20, 2025
Charles Ernest O'Cairns, affectionately known as "Chuck" to his friends and "Grandad" or "Grandog" to his beloved grandchildren, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025, at the age of 94, following health complications related to advanced age. Born in Three Rivers, Michigan, to Charles Edward Cairns and Helen Squires "Fitch" on September 14, 1930, Charles, fondly called "Corky" in his childhood, was the youngest of three siblings. He grew up alongside his brother George Cairns and sister Mary-Lou Cairns.
Charles was a spirited and enthusiastic individual from an early age, developing a healthy interest in physical fitness, working out, and gymnastics. His passion for sports saw him actively engage in boxing and gymnastics, competing in various tournaments and exhibitions around the Kalamazoo, Michigan area during his youth.
In 1950, Charles answered the call of duty, serving in the U.S. Army as a forward observer during the Korean War. Upon returning from service, he pursued higher education, eventually earning his college degree and briefly stepping into the role of a teacher. This tenure as a teacher was but brief, as Charles's entrepreneurial spirit led him to the realm of real estate development. This pursuit proved worthwhile, as he flourished by investing in a wide range of properties, from strip malls to hotels and mobile home parks. His sharp business acumen allowed him to build a stable and successful enterprise over the years. In 2002 he made his most defining career decision when he invested in a hotel in Lompoc, CA, which would become the O'Cairns Inn and Suites. The property continues up until the present day to be one of the city's highest rated lodging establishments. The venture provided him the chance to spend his final years alongside his family, and many fond memories were made at the hotel.
A man of many passions, Charles had an insatiable love for travel, a trait he passed down to his devoted daughter and best friend, Tory O'Cairns. His adventurous spirit took him around the globe multiple times, even into his later years. Charles was well-known for his unique sense of humor, which was often dry but always relatable and revealing of deeper truths. His zest for life remained undiminished, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Charles is survived by his daughter Tory O'Cairns, his son Steve Bollinger, and ten grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his legacy. He will be dearly missed by family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
