Christine "Chris" Martinez Leyva, 63, a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister passed away Sunday, October 6, 2012, in Sherman, Texas. Christine was born on December 18, 1949, in Lompoc, California. She is survived by her husband Sal Leyva, son John Ortega, daughter Joni Ortega-Rocha, stepson David Leyva, mother Josie Martinez, brothers Mike (Shirley) and David Martinez, granddaughters Alexis and Erica Rocha, Cassandra Ortega, grandson John Casey Ortega, nieces Theresa Martinez-Baker, Monica Dunn and nephews Michael, Paul, Bucky, Ronnie, Anthony and Eric Martinez.
All those who knew Christine will remember her joking, her smile, unconditional love and most of all her laughter. She always wanted to make everyone happy around her worrying about everyone else but herself. She took care of people during sickness or just down in their luck. Another talent she had was a master cook of Mexican food. A lot of people always found themselves visiting her around dinner time because she always had plenty to go around. One of her last hobbies was Facebook; she loved it because it was a way for her to be in touch with everyone she knew. If you were a "friend" you could expect a Farmville invite, pictures and likes on your page as her friend. Christine lived in many places but she always called Lompoc HOME. We all will miss her, but we will never forget her.
Christine was preceded in death by her father Gilbert Martinez, sister Irene "Bonnie" Martinez, brother Patrick Martinez and daughter Anita Ruiz.
The recitation of the Holy Rosary will be on Friday, October 19, at 7 pm in the chapel of the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. Father Tom Cook will celebrate the memorial mass on Saturday, October 20, at 8 am at La Purisima Catholic Church. The interment will be at the Lompoc Cemetery at a later date.
A "Celebration of Life" will immediately follow the mass at the Boys and Girls Club of Lompoc located at 1025 West Ocean Avenue in Lompoc. Join us in celebrating Christine's life. Please contribute to a charity of your choice in her honor in lieu of flowers.
