Obituary

Clyde William (Bill) Rule, a lifelong resident of Lompoc passed away Sunday, March 27th at the age of 87.  Bill is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Arlene; his daughters Teri Silva(John); Tami Vargas; son Ron Rule(Sherri); grandchildren John, Michael, Tommy, and Jimmy Silva; Adam and Lindsey Rule; Ryan and Allison Vargas; great-grandchildren Sophia Silva, Christopher and Liam Rule, Boston and Amari Dixon, and Ryder Vargas; and his brother-in-law Sam Bishop.

Bill was born July 8, 1934, in Lompoc to Winfield Rule and Mary Skaarup Rule.   After a short stint at Cal Poly, he joined his father working at Grefco where he worked for 44 years, retiring as plant superintendent.   He and his father also ran Lompoc Ice Company for many years.

Bill was very active in his community.  He was a charter member of Lompoc Elks Lodge, Lompoc High School Alumni Association, and Lompoc Historical Society.  He was a member of the Elks for 62 years.  He served terms as president of the Alumni Association and the Historical Society.  He was elected to the Lompoc High School Alumni Hall of Fame and the Babe Ruth Baseball State and Pacific Southwest Regional hall of fames.

Bill began coaching Babe Ruth Baseball in 1962 and it combined two of his lifelong passions of sports and travel.   He coached teams to the 1968 and 1971 Babe Ruth World Series.   He eventually traveled to every state in the Union and every continent except Antarctica.  He visited all three military academies.  He attended countless sporting contests, the most notable were: the Olympics; the Super Bowl; the World Series; NBA Finals; Final Four; Kentucky Derby; Indianapolis 500; College World Series; World Track Championships; and NCAA Track and Field Championships in Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Joan Bishop; his son-in-law Art Vargas Jr.

A memorial service for Bill will be held on Friday, April 8, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.  There will be a reception at the Lompoc Elks Lodge after the service.
