I am sorry to report that former Sheriff's Deputy Darrell Flint unexpectedly passed away on March 9, 2025, at the age of 85.
Darrell was born in Viborg, South Dakota, on May 16, 1939. Darrell was the son of Orville and Olive Flint. He attended local schools and graduated from Viborg High School. After high school, Darrell went on to attend Moorpark College.
Before Darrell started his law enforcement career, he served inthe United States Air Force from 1961 – 1964. After his service to our nation, he graduated from the Los Angeles Police Department academy. Years later, he moved to South Dakota where he served as the Chief of Police for the City of Madison, a community of about 6,000 that is about 50 miles northwest of Sioux Falls and is home to Dakota University. Eventually Darrell left South Dakota and came to settle in Santa Barbara County.
Darrell was hired by our agency on August 28, 1978 as a Sheriff's Deputy. On October 25, 1982, he was transferred to the Detective Unit Training Program and was the first deputy selected for this assignment. Darrell spent several years assigned to the Santa Maria station, and in 1990 he was transferred to the Lompoc station. He stayed in that assignment until he retired on January 2, 1995. He was then appointed as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. He officially separated from our agency on December 17, 1998.
In his spare time, Darrell loved spending time with his family. He was a man of many talents. He was an amazing artist and also enjoyed playing piano and he ran in the Lompoc marathon. - Sheriff Bill Brown
