Obituary

David Alfred Robertson, age 71, passed away in Avondale, Arizona on October 27, 2018.  Born in Brockton, Massachusetts on May 30, 1947, he was a son of the late Carl Robertson Sr. and Arlene (Duhamel) Gunyon.  He was educated in both Brockton, MA and Los Angeles, CA, and was a graduate of Gardena High School and would later receive his AA degree from Long Beach City College.  He met his first love in life, Glenda Vantuyl, during his high school years, and married her at 19 on October 15, 1966.  Shortly, thereafter, he was drafted into the United States Army, and served two years in Vietnam.  He was given an honorable discharge with the Vietnam Campaign and Service medal.  Seriously injured during his military enlistment, David returned to California, in 1969, with facial injuries and full blown Type 1 diabetes.  He settled down in Long Beach, with wife Glenda, and together they had two daughters, Heather and Erica.  David worked at Mc Donald Douglas for several years and later changed careers in life to a sales rep. and worked at Kelly mfg. co. until his retirement.

Like many Vietnam veterans, David suffered, throughout his life, with PTSD issues.  He came back to a country that would spit and curse him when he wore his uniform in public.  The actions of his fellow citizens greatly affected him.  He rarely spoke of battles, but in recent years, shared, in more detail with his siblings, the troubling memories and horrors of war.  He was a man who loved bowling, fishing, and a good baseball game.  However, he was also a man who was often haunted by the past, and, because of this, sometimes struggled to enjoy the simpler things in life.

In 2001 he married Marlen Munoz, who faithfully cared for him through several illnesses and surgeries.  100% disabled at the time of this death, Marlen was a loving companion and friend to her husband.  Over the years, David lived in Gardena, Long Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, Lompoc, Costa Rica, and Arizona.  He had decided this past year to sell his home and was considering moving to Lompoc with his wife Marlen.  He had shared he loved the Central Coast weather and all the perks of a small town.  Sadly, he passed away before returning to Lompoc.

David is survived by his wife Marlen Robertson; Daughters Heather Ramirez (Mario) and Erica Robertson; Grandchildren Malaina Ramirez, Michael Ramirez, Madison Robertson, Isabella Gonzalez, Sebastian Gonzalez; great-grandchild Aria Marie Ramirez/Beltran; Brothers Carl Robertson, Jr. (Asun), Deane Robertson (Debbie), Sister Cherri Hoffman (Carl) and numerous nieces and nephews.  We would be remiss if we didn't add Angie, his little dog who kept him walking and brought a smile to his face.  She gave him unconditional love.

A graveside service will be held on November 29, 2018, at 2 p.m at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.  Deacon Paul Nicastro will officiate.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations in David's memory to the Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-9927.  Phone # 859-442-1340
