Denys was born in Hollywood, California to Denys Allen, Sr. and Mary Mae Harris Clarke, and sister Bettie. Al and Mae divorced in 1927 and Denys and Bettie grew up close to one another with lots of extended family watchful over them.
Denys graduated from Hollywood High School and after working in the Long Beach ship yards joined the US Navy during WWII. He served as ship fitter in Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands.
In 1947 Denys married Maxine Jane Carpenter in Los Angeles. Two years later they moved with two children to Santa Barbara so he could attend UCSB training in education. Three days following graduation in January of 1954 Denys began teaching sixth grade at Harding School in Santa Barbara's Westside. He taught there 28 years refusing "advancement" as he was content and fulfilled in his teaching. He once said, "When the bell rings in the morning all except the class and day with them automatically fades for the school day.
Denys and Maxine had five children. Baby Bruce died at birth in 1949, David Howard died in 1977 at the age of 28. Denys is survived by Maxine (soon after their 62nd anniversary), daughter Jane Eller (Les), son Paul (Peggy), daughter Mary Gonzalez (Salvador), seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, and three of sister Bettie's sons.
Alongside teaching Denys enjoyed his garden, playing golf, all sports and reading. His greatest delight, deepest understanding and most complete commitment came in 1962 when he met Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. Family members' commitments have followed. He and Maxine served at Grace Church in Santa Barbara for 25 years, later attending Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Santa Barbara and in Lompoc on moving there. In recent years they worshipped at Lompoc Foursquare Church.
To the end of his life Denys impressed others with his loving smile and gracious ways. He loved Truth, Reason, Forgiveness and Common Sense. Hospice workers gave of themselves in his care with family, enabling him to die at home.
Burial will be in the Santa Barbara Cemetery alongside son David. The memorial service will be on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at 1:30 pm at Lompoc Foursquare Church.
In lieu of flowers those desiring to remember Denys may donate to Marian Hospice, 501 East Plaza Drive, Santa Maria 93454.
