May 6, 1960 – November 6, 2018
Derek Avillanoza, age 58, passed away November 6 th due to complications from a kidney transplant he had in 2015. He will be remembered as a loving husband, son, father, and brother. He was a long-time Lompoc resident and Cabrillo High Alumni. He will be missed dearly. He is survived by his wife of five years, Lee Avillanoza, children Malia Warren, Kara Avillanoza, and Kyle Avillanoza. Mother, Barbara Madamba, Brothers Victor and Stacy, Sisters Michelle Woods, Sonya Dallago, and Yvette Cothren. Grandchildren Cody and Haley Warren, and Mia Davis. He also leaves many relatives from Hawaii.
Derek was born in Honolulu, HI on May 6, 1960. Derek's Family moved to Lompoc in 1969. Derek grew up excelling at all sports. Upon graduation from Cabrillo High School, Derek briefly attended Fresno State and Allan Hancock College where he played baseball. He went on to a career at Raytheon, and later at the United States Penitentiary in Lompoc where he worked as a vocational trainer. He also held a part-time job as a stage manager at the Santa Barbara Bowl enjoying his passion for music. He loved classic rock and blues and had been fortunate enough over the years to see many of his favorite artists sharing personal stories about some of the greats.
He is lovingly remembered for being an avid sports fan and loving grandfather. Derek was involved with the sports community in Lompoc where he coached youth Football and Baseball. Derek also played on traveling softball teams in Lompoc and Santa Barbara.
He and his family made frequent trips to Hawaii, Yosemite, and Disneyland. They enjoyed camping, the beach, and outdoor BBQ's. When the weather was nice you could find him at the beach or on the golf course. He loved all things sports and went to the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix several times, the Masters in Augusta, Georgia, as well as many Major League Baseball games.
In his later years, he and his wife Lee traveled frequently until his health no longer allowed for it. They made many trips to Hawaii, New England, and Northern California where they enjoyed time with children and grandchildren. They shared a mutual love for rock music and traveled the state enjoying concerts.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 15th, 2018 at the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary in Lompoc, CA at 10:30 AM, followed by a celebration of Derek's life at the Event Mission Valley building behind Starbuck-Lind. His family request that attendees dress in their favorite Hawaiian or casual attire. Flowers can be sent to Starbuck-Lind or in lieu of flowers a donation can be made to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara County who helped the family greatly in the last year of his life.
