April 29, 1930 – July 28, 2018
Dolores Quade Herigstad (88) died suddenly of a stroke on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.
Dolores was born in Beach, North Dakota, on April 29, 1930, to Agnes and Adolph Quade. She was raised on a farm near Wibaux, Montana, with four brothers and one sister. Upon high school graduation, she was awarded a scholarship to Presentation College in Miles City, Montana, where she earned a Registered Nurse degree. She worked at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, where she took care of a young man, Vernon "Buddy" Herigstad, who was recovering from a motorcycle accident. She and Bud married on November 16, 1954. They moved to Lompoc, California, in 1961. Dolores worked at Lompoc Hospital delivering babies for more than 25 years.
She and Bud enjoyed a large, jovial group of friends, including Bud's coworkers, their "gang" of friends from Montana, relatives, numerous neighbors, and the parents of their children's classmates.
She was very active at La Purisima Catholic School, sewing red ribbon uniform ties, serving lunch on hot dog day, and working at parish functions like the annual bazaar.
Dolores was a devout Catholic. She belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America and initiated and maintained the Sacred Heart Chapel at La Purisima Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981, her parents and sister Marjorie (Quade) Gilman in 1988, and brother Richard Quade in 1993.
Dolores is survived by three brothers: Louis, Lawrence, and Robert Quade; five daughters: Teresa, Cheryl, Roberta, Sandra, and Karen; four sons-by-marriage, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
