Saturday, Nov. 4, we said farewell to our joyous, faithful husband, loving father, grandfather, eldest brother and faithful friend, Donald Klug.
Surrounded by family and friends who kept a week-long vigil after a stroke on Oct. 26, he slipped peacefully into the arms of his Savior at the age of 90.
Donald's life was an inspiration and a testimony to all who knew and loved him.
An example of Christian living, he left many memories of mentoring, teaching, loving and sharing with those whom his life had touched. When Don lived in Burbank he served many terms on the school board for American Lutheran Elementary School. He ushered regularly for his church from 1946 to 1994.
Don's life work extended 55 years as a machinist and very talented tool and die maker. During these years he lovingly supported his family and shared with his friends in a positive and endearing way.
Don enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, gardening, home shop work, a good game of cards, collecting clowns and reading. The thing he loved best was being together with his family.
Born in Elgin, IL to Martha and Hugo Klug, Donald was the oldest of five children. In May 1937 he traveled to Los Angeles, CA for a "vacation", wound up finding a job and staying.
He married his sweetheart, Helen
Johnson, in 1938. They moved to Burbank, CA in 1942 where they raised their family and lived until they retired to Lompoc, CA in 1994.
Don leaves behind his wife and life-long love, Helen, after 68 years of marriage, daughter Kathy Liebersbach of Beijing, China, her husband Jerry, daughter Sharon Payne of Lompoc, her husband Bobby, brother Allen Klug of Mt. Shasta, CA, his wife Tita, three grandsons, Robert Klug, David Liebersbach and Daniel Liebersbach, two granddaughters, Debra Liebersbach and Jennette Payne, and two great grandchildren, Joseph Liebersbach and Jillian Liebersbach, as well as a large extended family with whom Don and Helen have
continually kept in touch.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.
A memorial service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 1000 W. Ocean Ave., Lompoc, on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 1:30pm.
Memorials may be given to the Lompoc Convalescent Care Center or to Peace Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary with viewing from 4:00 - 8:00pm Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 123 N. "A" Street.
