Obituary

Doris Charlene Brockman Ribble, 80, of Lompoc California, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2024, at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with her husband Don at her side. She fought a valiant battle against pancreatic cancer but lost

Born February 5, 1944, in Corning, California, she was the darling daughter to parents Charles E. and Hazel J. Brockman. Doris was a proud 4th generation California native who has lived in Lompoc, California since 1964. She was a resident of Mesa Oaks for 48 years living in the home she and Don Built together.

Doris treasured her time at Magic Valley Christian High School and College in Albion, Idaho. She is a graduate of California State University Chico. She received her Master of Arts in Reading from California State University San Luis Obispo.

She was predeceased by her parents Charles E. Brockman and Hazel J. Brockman. Doris is survived by her husband of 56 years Donald, brother Richard Brockman (Bernice) of Vernon BC, brother Charles David Brockman (Nancy) of Twin Falls Idaho, sister-in-law Caryl Chiairilli (David) of Geneva, New York as well as nephews Jeremy Brockman {Sunny) of Phoenix, AZ, John Brockman (Crystal) of Baker City, OR, Greg Brockman (Cara) of Vernon, BC, as well as Nieces Marilynn Graham (James) of Colorado Springs, CO, Melissa Fedorak (Paul) of Armstrong, BC, Maureen of Calgary, AB, Jill Walter (Rob) of Romulus, New York, Jessica Storto (lee) of Ithaca New York. Great Nephews Matthew, Cortlen, Travis, Weston, Will and CJ. Great nieces, Olivia, Arianna, Paige, Aria, Tara, Anna, and Sara. Although Doris never had any children of her own, she always considered her nephews, nieces, great nephews, and nieces as her own children.

Doris overcame many struggles in life. In 1954 at the age of 10, she became afflicted with Polio while living in Shasta County in northern California just months before the vaccine became available. At age 12 Polio caused extreme scoliosis to afflict her spine resulting in spinal fusions and spending 9 months in a full-body cast.  Her loving parents Charles and Hazel are to be thanked for her care. In 2004 she had breast cancer for the first time, and then again in 2015. These struggles did not define her. Throughout these ordeals, she was confident and always strong in her faith. She led her life as an example for others to follow. She supported others around her with her Christian love.

A life-long member of the Church of Christ she was gifted with a beautiful voice. She began singing early in life, and continued singing with Choruses while attending Magic Valley Christian College in Albion, Idaho. After arriving in Lompoc in 1964 she sang with church radio programs, with choruses, at funerals and at church for her entire life.

Doris was a teacher in the Lompoc Unified School District for 39 years, retiring in 2004. She taught at Miguelito, Hapgood, Los Padres, and Crestview Elementary Schools. She was especially proud of the 24 years she spent at Hapgood teaching Kindergarten, and the 14 years she spent as a Reading Specialist. She touched the lives of hundreds of children and considered them her own.

She was a master gardener who never met a plant she didn't like or couldn't grow. She grew tomatoes, many varieties of vegetables, roses, citrus, succulents, apples, dahlias, and cacti just to name a few. She also was an accomplished cook who made homemade bread, canned and froze everything from her extensive garden.

She was a strong supporter of the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara, Samaritan's Purse, IFOPA, Direct Relief International, Food Bank of Santa Barbara County, Lompoc Hospital Foundation, Lompoc Museum, Lompoc Pops, Lompoc Master-Chorale, and the Lompoc Church of Christ.

The family would like to thank Dr. Donna Walker and her staff at Lompoc Oncology, and the doctors and nurses at the MICU unit at Cottage Hospital for their compassion and care for Doris. We also thank Starbuck-Lind Mortuary for their kindness at this difficult time.

A Celebration of Life for Doris will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Lompoc Church of Christ, 138 North O Street, Lompoc, California with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lompoc Church of Christ building fund.
