Doris Warrick of Las Vegas, formerly of Lompoc 1951-1974, passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday October 4, 2017 at the age of 90. She was born in Sharon, Wisconsin on February 8, 1927 to Harry and Anna Piper. Doris met her husband, James D. Warrick, in the 7th grade when he moved to Sharon with his parents. When they graduated from high school in 1944 they both went to the University of Wisconsin, Madison in an accelerated pre-med program due to World War II. At the end of the semester Doris developed appendicitis and had to drop out of school Jim joined the Navy that fall and Doris went to Chicago to live with her sister and to work. She and her sister both worked as Rosie the Riveters testing bomber engines. After the war Jim returned to medical school and Doris began a nursing program at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago. Jim and Doris married in April of 1948. Jim's parents were living in Camarillo, CA. so Doris lived with them and worked as a nurse at the State Hospital. When Jim finished medical school, he got an internship at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, after that Doris and Jim then moved to Lompoc, CA. Jim started his medical practice and was later joined by Dr. Eldon Elam and Dr. William Gausman who formed Valley Medical Group. Doris worked in their office as a nurse and later continued doing insurance and billing at home. Jim and Doris moved to Madison, Wisconsin in 1977 accepting the offer of Director of the Family Practice Residency Program and Medical Director of the PA Program at the University of Wisconsin Medical school. Thirteen years later, Jim and Doris retired and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. Doris and Jim enjoyed golfing with their new friends and traveling and cruising with family.
During their years in Lompoc, their family grew and Doris, who was the most kind and caring person, supported her children to the fullest. She never missed any activity, sporting event or performance they were involved in and she was also active in fundraising for Easter Seal and other worthy causes. She loved to play golf and was club champion both at the Village Country Club Lompoc and at their club in Las Vegas.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Anna Piper, her husband James D. Warrick MD, and her sister Janet Piper. She is survived by her daughters Michelle Morlan (Eric), Denise Warrick, and Piper Crawford (John), and her son James Warrick (Peggy), her sister Anita Charboneau, 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A service for Doris will be held November 4, 2017 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 2800 Harris Grade Lompoc, CA. at 2pm followed by a Celebration of Life reception at the home of James Warrick.
