Obituary

Dorothy Lee Carter, age 85, of Lompoc, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2008. She was born December 17, 1922, to the union of Clarence and Katie (McClellan) Childress.

She was born in Burk Burnett, Texas. Formerly of Durango, Colorado, she came to the Central Coast in 1987, settling in Lompoc two years later. She was employed as an Assessment Clerk for Los Angeles County for ten years. Dorothy loved music. In her earlier years, she played the guitar and related instruments in the south with her dad and later during WWII with family and friends. She belonged to Local Widows to Widowers support group with whom she continued to stay closely connected over the years.

She is survived by her daughter, Rosalie Valencia, of Santa Ynez; sister, Mable Lou Brown, of Victorville, CA; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis E. "Jack" Carter, in 1984; son, James Carter; daughter, Donna Laird; and brother, Joel Childress.

A memorial service will take place in the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Chapel on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Reil of Peace Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
