Dorothy Lee Harrison was born September 4, 1929 to the late Ivey Alston and Lenora Martin Alston in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
At the age of eight, Dorothy Lee accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. She was raised in the church where she continued her strong commitment to the Lord never wavering in her faith. This dedication to her faith, and moral values became the foundation of how she lived her life as a loving wife and mother.
In 1948, Dorothy Lee graduated from John Armstrong Chaloner High School in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina where a long distinguished life of education would begin. She graduated from St. Augustine's College in 1954 earning her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. Not long after her commencement Dorothy Lee began a distinguished 35 year teaching career. Immediately Dorothy Lee began to have an impact on children's lives across the globe, beginning in her home state of North Carolina, expanding to Washington, D. C., Japan, and Lompoc, California, where she retired from Lompoc Unified School District after 25 years of service.
On September 24, 1955 Dorothy Lee married the love of her life Sergeant Howard Lee Harrison, United States Air Force. Howard and Dorothy Lee began a wonderful 58 year journey beginning in Tucson, Arizona where Howard Lee's Air Force career led them to stops in Washington D.C. and Tokyo, Japan, until finally settling at Vandenberg A.F.B. in Lompoc, CA in 1964. Over the next fourteen years Howard and Dorothy Lee blossomed from a couple to a family of nine by adding seven children along the way, Howard Lee Jr., Lenora, Arieanna, Nyla, Alonzo, Cynthia and "J".
Dorothy Lee was a beautiful human being and a wonderful role model for all women. She had an amazing effect on everyone she came in contact with, her students, her colleagues, her church family and neighbors. She had unbelievable warmth about her. Her ability to make you feel as though you were the most important person in the world was second to none. While in her presence you couldn't help but feel loved. She treated people with kindness and respect. She followed the golden rule; do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Dorothy Lee was a dedicated child of God being a member of True Vine West Missionary Baptist #2 serving as an usher, Sunday school teacher and involved in women's ministries. She loved sports, was an athlete in her youth and loved cheering on her own children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at their athletic events. She was an avid Lakers, Cowboys and Dodgers fan (or) whoever was paying "J" in professional baseball at the time.
Dorothy Lee had many interests in her life. Teaching was her love and her service, but truth be told she may have had multiple callings. She was blessed with a green thumb. She loved caring for indoor plants and gardening. As Howard always said "she could make a dead flower grow." She loved canning the very fruits and vegetables she nurtured. She was a culinary genius in the Kitchen. Friends and family would travel miles just to get a seat at the table for one of her fish fry's. Her biscuits, fried chicken, rice and gravy, greens, turkey, ham, sweet potato pie were favorites, and her signature creamed beef had a way of warming your soul. She loved sewing, and was great at it. She could be anything she wanted to be, but more importantly she was always what she needed to be.
On September 25, 2013 Dorothy Lee peacefully entered the golden gates of heaven, no doubt being a first ballot inductee into the Lord's Hall of Fame.
