Obituary

Dorothy Louise Wright "Mums" found peace with her Lord and Savior while surrounded by family at the Convalescent Care Center on June 15, 2018 in Lompoc at the age of 90.

Dorothy is survived by her husband of 65 years, George Sr., brother Ron Schilling and wife Mary Lynne, Children; Cindy (Steve), Sons George Jr (Tereza), John (Jennifer), by her grandchildren Warren (Lauren), Caelan, Kane, Josh, Jenna, Katie, Tiffany and great-grandchildren Cameron and Paige.

Dorothy is preceded in death by parents Herman and Effie Shilling, adoptive parents Ayliffe and Howard McElroy, infant son Robert, son Marvin, sisters Mildred and Ester(Delbert), brothers Herman "Sonny" (Annabelle), Curtiss (Gladys), Warren, Elmer (Julie), Clarence "Barney" (Margie), Marvin, Lawrence "Larry" (Sandy).

Dorothy was born in Lark, ND. on September 24, 1927 to Herman and Effie Schilling.  After a fire devastated the family home, Dorothy's grade school teacher Ayliffe and husband Howard McElroy, who had grown to love Dorothy, adopted Dorothy, helping Herman and Effie raise her into adulthood.  She graduated from Vancouver High School in 1946. Dorothy and George were married on June 21, 1952 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Vancouver Washington.  After moving to Lompoc in 1962 with children Marvin, Cindy and George Jr., Dorothy and George welcomed their youngest son, John into the family.  Her children will remember her for her quiet strength and dedication to them throughout their lives. She will be remembered with love by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they continue her legacy through the sharing of her recipes and stories of her as they each remember best.

Dorothy was an accomplished cook and loved to make pies and cookies.  She had mastered pinquito beans, "green slime", her mother's potato salad and crescent roll recipes along with too many dishes to list. Dorothy loved the game of baseball, volunteering for many years as the official scorekeeper for George and John's Lompoc Little League games. She bled Dodger Blue to the end.  She was an active and dedicated member of Bethany Lutheran Church serving on the altar guild for many years.

Dorothy's funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Thursday June 21, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Lompoc with a celebration of life to follow. Graveside services will be attended by family only. Pastor Joe Byrd will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dorothy's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of choice in Dorothy's memory. The family would like to thank Dorothy's extended family at Lompoc Convalescent Care Center for their love and dedication to Dorothy's care and to Barbara and Leslie from Assisted Healthcare for hospice services and support.
