Edward D. Thompson
Ed Thompson died peacefully at home February 12th at the age of 84.
He was born in 1929 in Brookline, Massachusetts, the son of Joseph William and Nora Helen Thompson. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, along with 5 brothers who served in the Marines. Ed learned his trade as an auto mechanic in his youth and refined his skill as he served his country for ten years, including service in Okinawa and Korea. He moved to Lompoc in 1967 and was employed as a mechanic at Texaco, Sunset, Mobil and retired from Valley Rock landscape.
He is survived by his sisters Barbara Capodilupo, Billerica, MA; Helen (Butch) Savage, Rye, NH; Gail Gionet, Windham, NH; and Brother Pete (Shirley) Thompson, Estero, FL. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Joseph Donnelly, William Thompson, Robert Thompson and Earl Thompson. Ed had three stepdaughters, and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews, his lifelong friends who loved him like family. Many would affectionately call him brother or dad.
Ed was blessed to find love twice in life, when he found Joann Johnson. She shared his love for people, laughter, old cars, gardening and the mountains. He was a strong, intelligent man and from that strength and know how flowed a generous spirit. Ed enjoyed helping people. In the evening he would set down with the newspaper to work the crossword puzzle and the word cipher, in ink. Ed was a self-taught musician who loved to play bar room piano tunes, but always played hymns on Sunday morning. He also played the accordion and harmonica.
Services will be held March 13 at 10:00 am at La Purisima Catholic Church, followed by Internment at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery and a reception at Bethany Lutheran Church at the corner of South E Street and Cypress. Sincere thanks to the staff of Lompoc Hospital and Convalescent Care Center, and the Dignity Health staff of Santa Maria for the gentle loving care showed to Ed.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as memorial in Ed's name.
