Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Murphy, 85, of Lompoc passed away peacefully on November 9, 2024 at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California with her family at her side. Elizabeth was born on August 25, 1939 in Charleston, South Carolina to John Joseph Madden Sr. and Herta Marle Madden, eldest of their 4 children. She graduated in 1957 from Bishop England High School in Charleston. She also attended College of Charleston and was employed by South Carolina National Bank. She met her husband Carl while he was in the U.S. Navy stationed at Charleston. Elizabeth and Carl were married in 1965 at Sacred Heart Church in Charleston. After the wedding they moved to California where Carl was employed on Vandenberg Air Force Base for ITT corporation. Elizabeth was employed in Lompoc by Security Pacific Bank and later for Lompoc Valley Escrow and Chicago Title as an escrow officer for over 2 decades, retiring in 2006. Elizabeth also worked part time as a real estate broker, establishing Murphy Realty with Carl as her partner.

She was beloved by all who knew her, a testament to her southern upbringing. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family, particularly her granddaughter Lauren. She was a cancer survivor of nearly 50 years and she lovingly cared for her husband Carl throughout his 10-year long battle with cancer. Her kind and loving soul will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 50 years Carl Edward Murphy, her sister Martha A. Madden, and her brother John Joseph Madden Jr. She is survived by her sister Cecilia Velte, her sons Brian J. and Mark A. Murphy, their wives Karen and Angel Murphy.  She is also survived by her Granddaughter Lauren Murphy, born to Brian and Karen in 2019. Graveside services will be held at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.
