Obituary

Esther Anna Slaine of Lompoc died Friday, April 11, 2014, at the age of 102.

Esther was born January 5, 1912 in Detroit, Michigan to Anna and Joseph Bosman.  She had three siblings, Elmer, Art and Eleanor.

When Esther was 16, she had worked in a nightclub called the Merry Go Round.  Then at the age of 17 she worked at Van Warmer Industries as a machine shop operator.  At the age of 17 she gave birth to her only son Gordon.  She lived in Warren, Michigan where she raised him.

In the 1940s she moved to White Could Michigan with her third husband Clarence Slaine.

In the 1960s she moved again, this time to Oxnard, California where she worked as a motel maid for the Wagon Wheel Hotel and Bowling Center.

In the 1970s she moved to Buellton, California where her son Gordon and daughter-in-law Joyce bought the Farmhouse Motel.  She was the maid for a few years.  After a while she wanted to retire.

She later moved to Los Alamos, Orcutt, Santa Maria and finally Lompoc.

In June of 2011, Esther was crowned Queen of the Lompoc Comprehensive Care Center.  She was the oldest queen they had ever had.  She wore her crown with joy and fulfilled her role proudly.  Six months later, in January of 2012 she turned 100.  What a milestone for her.  She loved the attention she received for being the queen and for turning 100 years old.

Esther loved to bowl, dance and play Bingo.  She loved her bananas and Hershey Candy bars.

She leaves behind her only son Gordon West of Linn Creek Missouri, two granddaughters, April Brown and Cheryl Santana of Lompoc, three great grandchildren, Corey Brown, Selena and Steven Santana, all of Lompoc.

Esther was a very vibrant, stubborn, outspoken, happy and entertaining lady.  She loved her granddaughter April with all her heart.  She will be greatly missed.

The celebration of her life will be Saturday, April 26, 2014, from 3 to 6 pm at 1116 Bellflower Lane in Lompoc.
