Obituary

Lifelong Lompoc resident Eugene "Gene" Mitty passed away peacefully at his home January 10, 2015. Born January 26, 1936 in Santa Barbara, CA, he was the eldest of three children born to Jess and Hazel Mitty. At the age of three, his family moved to Lompoc. He had an active childhood and developed a love of football. After graduating from Lompoc High School he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Madsen of Solvang and joined the Army. Upon completing his service, he was employed by John Mansville and later became a skilled millwright. He was a member of the Carpenters Union 1607 and his local Elks Lodge.

Gene loved his family and truly enjoyed his grandchildren. He was a prankster by nature who loved hilarious stories and practical jokes, even at the family's expense. He enjoyed music, reading, hunting, hot rods, classic cars and travel. The imprint he left on all our lives will not be forgotten. Our hearts are broken for our loss but joyful because he is at peace.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Marilyn; three daughters Lauren (Craig) Magnusen of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, Tamara (Nick) Rarig of Cayucos, CA and Maralee (Ronald) Velasco of Lompoc, CA.; his aunt Ruth Pemble; two sisters Betty Roblin and Mary Mitty; grandchildren Kelsey (Erich) Klemme , Kara Magnusen, Coel and Keelan Rarig, Karolina and Ava Velasco; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Celebration Officiated by Life-Cycle Celebrant Stacy Mitchell will be held at the family home in Lompoc, CA on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 11 am. A private family interment at Oak Hill Cemetery will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local library, the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden or a charity of your choice.
