Frederick Columbus Sr. was born in 1932 in New Orleans, LA, to the late Priscilla and Elijah Columbus Sr. From an early age, Frederick displayed a joyful spirit and a love for music. During his school years at McDonogh 35 Senior High School, he played the drums and was a part of His high school marching band. He
He loved dancing and bringing energy and happiness to those around him.
At a young age, Frederick accepted Christ and was baptized at New Mount Era MBC of New Orleans, LA, where his lifelong foundation of faith began.
In 1951, Frederick answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. He faithfully served for 20 years with honor and dedication before retiring from military service. After completing his military career, Frederick continued his strong work ethic by joining Boeing Aerospace Company, where he worked faithfully for another 20 years before retiring.
Frederick was a man deeply devoted to his faith, family, and community. He was one of the founders of Grace Temple Missionary Baptist Church, where he faithfully worshiped and served since 1964. Throughout the years, he served in many leadership positions within the church, including Usher President, Chairman of the Trustee Board, and President of the Men’s Choirs. He loved serving as an usher and took great pride in welcoming others into the house of God.
Frederick was also highly involved in the California State Baptist Convention, where he built lasting friendships and meaningful fellowship connections that extend back to his roots in New Orleans, LA, where he was crowned King for the Ushers at the California State Baptist Convention. His dedication to ministry, service, and fellowship touched countless lives throughout the years.
In addition to his church service, Frederick was a respected 33rd degree Mason whose life reflected brotherhood, integrity, leadership, and compassion for others. He was known throughout the community as a man who gave generously of his time, wisdom, and heart.
Frederick was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah Columbus Sr. and Priscilla, his first wife, Helen Columbus; his sisters, Sadie Dangerfield, Selena Lerew, Bertha Radcliffe, Beatrice Brown, and Rosemary Mickens; and his brothers, Thomas Columbus, Edward Columbus, and Author Columbus.

His children: Frederick Columbus Jr. of New Orleans LA, Dennis Columbus Sr. of Lompoc CA, Kevin Columbus of Las Vegas Nevada, Sharon Smith of Rodeo CA, Milton Royster of Lompoc CA, and Janelle Columbus of Lompoc CA and two Bonus Daughter’s Carolyn Robinson of Las Vegas Nevada and Teresa Wiley of Lompoc CA, His nieces and nephews Whilda Johnston, Sadie Robinson, Barbara Picquet, Rosemarie Vantress, Antoinette Batchan, Brenda Graham, Willie Jackson, Oliver Mickens, Robert Ratcliffe Jr., Antoine Brown. His sister-in-law’s: Mercedes Rankin of New York, Amelia (Vincent) Semper of CA, Magda Smythe of Georgia, Lola Columbus, daughter-in-law Brittany, son- in- Law Eric, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Frederick Columbus Sr. will be remembered for his warm spirit, unwavering faith, love for family, dedication to his church, and lifelong service to others. His legacy of kindness, leadership, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved Him.
