Obituary

Frederick Warren Cross passed away October 7, 2011. Known as Warren to his immediate family, Fred was born on April 24, 1922 in Bombay, NY to Frederick Leslie Cross and Laura Mae Cross. He was a dedicated son, dependable brother, doting uncle, devoted husband, steadfast friend and loyal American. Fred's personality was larger than life, with a sense of humor to match. His integrity was unequaled, his word and handshake meant more than any written contract.

After graduating from Bombay High School, he worked for several years at a psychiatric hospital in Long Island, NY. While employed there, Fred married his high school sweetheart, Ercel Jock.

In 1943, Fred joined the US Marine Corps. After basic training, he was deployed to New Caledonia and then on to the landing operation against the enemy on Peleliu Island. Being raised in upstate NY, he never expected to come home with malaria and jungle rot.

After Marine Corps service, Fred attended school at Champlain College. With excellent scores, he quickly transferred to Syracuse University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Being a part of ROTC, not long after graduation, Fred was called up for active duty during the Korean Conflict. He entered the US Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant. Because he lost two brothers in WWII, he was assigned to duty stateside.

After military service, Fred felt the call to move west. He held several jobs, from Gaylord Library Supply House in Syracuse then headed to Kansas City, and on to Phoenix working for General Electric.

It was in Phoenix that he started working in the real estate industry. He worked all over California, but loved and settled in Santa Barbara County where he was involved with the construction and sales of several housing developments. The last 31 years, he lived in one of his homes in Lompoc, where he was quickly endeared to his many neighbors.

Fred is survived by his wife of almost 69 years, Ercel, his sister, Sara Fournier, local nieces Susan Herrera and Jan Fournier and many more nieces and nephews on both coasts. All those who knew and loved him will miss his presence.
