Obituary

GARY J. LIBBY
1942-2008

Surrounded by family and lifetime friends, Gary J. Libby, the most loving and generous man to bless our lives, has passed away.

Gary was born April 16, 1942 to Wayne R. Libby and Fay Libby in Eerie, PA. He married his wife of 49 years, Sheila, on August 3, 1959. After marriage, he joined the Navy and proudly served aboard the USS Kitty Hawk with his high school buddy Larry Miller. After many trips from the east coast to the west, he decided that Lompoc was his home. He worked at Lockheed where he always said, "If you're not working at Lockheed, you're probably working too hard." He later joined the Lompoc Police Dept. in 1971. He worked there until 1978, when an on the job accident forced him to take medical retirement. He retired as an Agent. He furthered his career by getting a master's degree in Criminal Justice from the University of La Verne. He moved on to Santa Barbara County where he worked at the District Attorney's office. Then he went to the Own Recognizance Unit working for the Superior Court. He retired from the county in 2003.

He was preceded in death by his father Wayne, his mother, Fay, his stepmother Nettie, sister Carol, and his great-granddaughter Kristen Michelle.
He leaves behind a most loving family. His wife of 49 years, Sheila, Gary W. Libby of Sedona AZ, Andrea Libby of Tulsa, OK, Sherri Libby (Randy) of Lancaster, PA, Forrest (January) Libby of Lompoc, CA, sister Linda (Bob) Derby of Portland, OR, sister Sharon (Steve) Arnold of Arroyo Grande, CA, sister Melanie (David) McNabb of Santa Maria, CA, and more grandchildren and great-grandchildren than you can spoil.

A memorial service will be held at La Purisima State Historic Park around the fountain at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2008, 2295 Purisima Rd., Lompoc, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations for the Prelado de los Tesoros (mission docents) will be appreciated.

Arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
