On Thursday October 16, after a short but beautiful journey here on Earth with his family, George Francis Magers III, began the rest of his life with his Lord in Heaven.
George was born in Oakland, California on August 15, 1935 to Margaret and George Magers II. His mother raised the children while his father worked as a talented cartoonist for Walt Disney. He lived a happy childhood with one brother, Dick Magers, until tragedy struck him at the age of 5 and he lost his father to illness. His mother remarried several years later and he was given a second brother, Robert Bruce Greek.
The family stayed in Anaheim until George joined the navy and served our country as a man of honor. In 1955, at the age of 20, George was stationed in Hawaii where he met a young woman while square dancing at the naval club on Waikiki Beach. They danced together until they became friends and until she could convince her father to let her invite George to her birthday party. George accepted her invitation and went to the party. It was then that he found out Claudine would be celebrating her 14th birthday and needless to say when he left that party he thought he would never go back. But as fate would have it, she turned out to be the love of his life and not only did he go back to see her he took her home to Anaheim with him as his wife.
In 1960, they moved to Lompoc where George began employment as a Civil Engineer at Vandenberg Air Force Base. In 1962 along came their one and only son, Mark Michael Magers and they lived together happily as a family of three. Of course that did not satisfy them and in 1968, to add to their family, they adopted their one and only daughter, Michelle Marie.
George was a loving husband to Claudine. Together they were very active in Marriage Encounter where they met and befriended many of the dear and loving friends they still have today. For 30 years, they actively participated in their Marriage Encounter Supper Club every month until his very end.
He was a great dad, volunteering often as a coach for both of his children, and always made sure they had whatever they needed in their lives to be comfortable and happy.
He was a great grandfather and had 6 very loving grandchildren. In the order of their ages, Leah Marie Magers, Lanae Marie Magers, Robert Christopher Solorio, Mathew Mark Magers , Jordan Ainez Orozco, and Jianna Ainez Orozco. George was dedicated to his grandkids and nothing made him happier than to watch them in all of their activities and sports. He was an avid fan of baseball and always collected prized memorabilia, but NO trophy was worth more to him than the ones from his two grandsons Robby and Mathew. Those were priceless.
In his last few years, George fell ill to Dementia and struggled to get around, especially to the sporting events of the children and everyday events with his wife. He loved everybody he met and he knew who each and every person was to the very end even when he could no longer speak.
He suffered a massive stroke on the Monday preceding his death while resting at home with his family. They were at his side and were able to tell him how much they loved him before he slipped away into a coma. He rested peacefully for a few days and went quietly and gracefully on the 16th with his loving family at his side. He will be greatly missed by many but he will now no longer suffer.
He is survived by his wife Claudine, son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lisa Magers,
daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Jose Orozco, all six grandchildren, and his brother Dick Magers of McMinnville, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, step father and brother Robert Bruce Greek.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 22, from 5-8 pm at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. Father Tom Cook will celebrate the mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, October 23, at 10 am at La Purisima Catholic Church. Cremation will be followed by private inurnment in the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
