George was in the Navy, Army, and Air Force reserves. He served a tour in Vietnam as part of the elite 173 rd Ranger Regiment, 75 th Airborne Rangers. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor during his tour of duty. He remained a patriotic veteran, always paying respect to his country, flag, fallen heroes, and fellow veterans throughout his life. He participated in veteran's organizations, including the VFW, American Legion, and Boots & Chutes Airborne Association.
He was extremely hard working and never missed a day of work. His 35-year long career in Civil Service began as a journeyman machinist in the Long Beach Shipyards. In the early 80's, he moved into power production on Vandenberg Air Force Base as a mechanic, engineer, and supervisor. Upon retirement, he continued to work in power production with Raytheon for another 10 years.
He was huge fan of cowboy movies and always dreamed of living in the old west. He was always tinkering with something, an old Chevy truck, his mustang, a WWII era Jeep, or his beloved Harley, and he loved to go on scenic rides with his wife. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed taking the whole family camping, fishing, and to great outdoor destinations. He loved to BBQ and was famous for his culinary "Santa Maria Style" skills. Every Sunday a crowd would gather at his home to get a taste and he happily fed the neighborhood.
He was kind, loving, and generous to all. He had a positive impact on all who met him. He was a knowledgeable teacher that passed important life lessons to multiple generations of kids that were in and out of his house over the years. He was a true family man and loving husband. He deeply loved his wife and family and always let us know with a quick "love you, be safe." He was an amazing father, awesome "Papa", and father figure to many more. He touched the lives of many people over the years and was loved by all. He will be greatly missed.
His memorial will be Nov. 6 th from 9-10:00 am at the Lompoc Cemetery, followed by a BBQ at River Park. All who knew him are invited. If you would like to come pay your respects, share some memories of George, and enjoy lunch with us, please RSVP to Steve @ (805) 315-4900.
