George Renfroe, Sr. died on Friday, July 3, 2009, at the age of 87, in Lompoc, California. George was born in Boyd County, Kentucky, on February 13, 1922, to Clevea and Samuel Renfroe. He grew up in Boyd County and graduated from Boyd County High School, moving to Lompoc in 1959.
George served his county as a member of the US Marine Corps. He served during World War II in Iwo Jima. He was employed as an electrician and worked on the Alaska pipeline and the space shuttle pads at Vandenberg Air Force Base. He also was a member of IBEW Local #413 for 45 years. George was a 50-year member of First Southern Baptist Church and was involved in prison and outreach ministries. He was also a Masonic Lodge member. George enjoyed hunting, gardening and spending time with his great granddaughters. He was also an avid baseball fan.
George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Frieda; sons, Ronald (Cathy) of Clearwater, Florida, and George (Sherry) Renfroe of Discovery Bay, California; four grandchildren, Laura Renfroe, Jacob (Sarah) Renfroe, Jacey Renfroe and Adam Renfroe; two great grandchildren, Madeline and Scarlett Renfroe; sisters, Armenta (Wilson) Barker and Garnet Sparks of Kentucky; and brothers, Charles (Geneiva) Renfroe and Sam (Barbara) Renfroe, all of Ohio. George was preceded in death by his son, Edward Renfroe, in 1973.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday July 8, 2009, from 4 to 7 pm at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 10 am at the First Southern Baptist Church, 1009 E. Pine Avenue, in Lompoc. Interment will follow in the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
