Obituary

George Allen Wright, Sr., "Pops" found peace in heaven with his wife Dorothy on October 12, 2018.  George was born February 18, 1929 in Arbyrd, Missouri to Robert and Beulah Wright. His family traveled from Missouri to Modesto, California during the Great Depression.  George enlisted in 1945, serving during World War II and the Korean War as a U.S. Navy Corpsman/Pharmacist Mate, Third Class. George never got tired of telling "war stories" to all who would listen, often after a good meal at John and Jennifer's house. His favorite was of meeting a petite auburn-haired beauty, Dorothy Schilling-McElroy at a dance while on shore leave. George was immediately smitten, spending the following day on an Oregon beach with Dorothy, her girlfriends and his Navy buddies, later returning to his duty station in Alaska. George and Dorothy fell in love via "snail mail" writing letters Dorothy kept the rest of her life.  The couple married June 21, 1952, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Vancouver, WA., two weeks after George received his discharge papers. While working for the government, the newlyweds traveled to Nebraska, Alabama and Washington state. George was then offered a job in 1962 with NASA at VAFB as a Launch Engineer, bringing his family to Lompoc. With a growing family and no money for extras, George worked nights and weekends repairing televisions and radios in the garage of the "W" St. house, making sure money was available for baseball bats, cleats and gloves for George and John, music lessons for Cindy, steak on Saturday nights, a rare date night with Dorothy and dinner for the family at San Martin. George was a long-standing member of Bethany Lutheran Church. George was preceded in death by Dorothy, his wife 65 years; their infant Son, Robert; Son Marvin; Sister, Florene; Brother Richard; Father, Robert and Mother Beulah. Survivors include Daughter, Cynthia and Stephen; Sons, George A. Wright, Jr. and Tereza; John and Jennifer; Daughter-in-law, Cheryl (Marvin); Brother Harold (Linda); Grandchildren, Warren and wife, Lauren; Caelan (George); Joshua, Jenna, Kaitlyn (John) and Great-grandchildren, Cameron and Paige, (Warren and Lauren).

A graveside ceremony was held with military honors, Tuesday October 16, 2018 at Lompoc Cemetery.  The family request donations be made in George's name to Bladder Cancer Research.
