Obituary

Peggy Kizziah passed away on Wednesday, December 28 th at Marian Hospital in Santa Maria after a brief illness.  She was 93 years old. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jennifer (McVicar) Kizziah, nieces, nephews, and extended family members in Alabama as well as many friends.

Peggy was born in Decatur, Alabama to George and Hattie Portwood.  Peggy was the third to the youngest of seven children. She had a very happy childhood growing up even though she was born at the start of the "Great Depression".  Both of her parents worked very hard and instilled a strong work ethic in all their children.

She married Albert Kizziah after graduating from high school in Decatur.   Albert joined the Airforce soon after and Peggy traveled with him to many locations over the course of their marriage.  Including two postings in Germany.

The true joy of Peggy's life were her two children, Debbie and Matthew.  She was very proud of both of them and their many accomplishments in life.

Peggy started working at a young age as a bookkeeper.  Later taking civil service jobs in accounting and finance as she moved from different military postings with her husband.  Albert and Peggy moved to Lompoc in the early seventies for Albert's final military posting at Vandenberg AFB and purchased a home.  She began working at Vandenberg AFB for the Department of Defense.  Peggy returned to school in her forties, while still working full-time, and received a bachelor's degree in accounting and management.   She ultimately rose to the highest rank in the civil service as a Finance Officer.

Peggy retired from the Civil Service but remained active by sharing her financial talents/experience volunteering with different organizations in Lompoc.  She spent many years on the board of directors for Coast Hills Credit Union, helping them grow and expand their services, of which she was very proud.  She served as President of the Lompoc Valley Art Assoc., Treasurer for the Lompoc Mural Society and Older Adult Services.  She loved Lompoc and worked very hard to help create a vibrant city environment for all its citizens.

Peggy had a great love of art, especially western-themed works.  After retiring she took classes in sculpting, ceramics, and painting.  She enjoyed experimenting with different artistic mediums.

She also loved to garden and arrange flowers.  In her later years puttering in her garden was one of her favorite things to do.

Peggy lived a very long and full life and is preceded in death by both of her children, Debbie Randle, and Matthew Kizziah, as well as her parents and all her siblings.  A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.  Funeral arrangements are being overseen by Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
