Obituary

Gerald F. Madden, 88, passed away at home in Lompoc, California on June 23, 2013 after a lengthy illness.

Gerald was born on February 18, 1925 to Robert and Pearl Madden in Pasco, Washington. Gerald grew up and attended grade school near Salina, Kansas and graduated from high school in Pasco, Washington. After high school, Gerald enlisted in the US Navy, and throughout his life shared many fond memories of his service time spent stationed in Kodiak, Alaska.

After his honorable discharge from the US Navy, Gerald returned to Salina, Kansas, where he worked for the rail road and met the love of his life, Clara Jane Wernette. Gerald and Clara were married two years later in Clay Center, Kansas. Together, they raised their four sons and one daughter, living in four different states during his twenty-seven year career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, retiring as Unit Manager in Lompoc in 1977.

Gerald spent his retirement years enjoying deep sea fishing, hunting, traveling, gardening, and loved walking his beagles (Bear and Dixie). He also volunteered a tremendous amount of time locally, helping deliver school lunches and supplies for Lompoc Unified School District. Gerald also helped out in the Consumer Mediation Division of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's office. Gerald was a charter member and officer for the Lompoc Chapter of the Federal Prisons Retirees Association and was honored for twenty-two years of service.

Gerald is survived by his loving wife Clara Jane; son Patrick and his wife Robin (grandchildren Jody, Jeffrey, Jacob); son Gerald Joseph and his wife Patty (grandchildren Gregory and Andrea); son Douglas and his wife Beverly (grandchildren Christopher and Jennafer); son Timothy; daughter Mary Lewis and her husband Terry (grandson Scott and wife Desiree with great grandchildren Luke, Savannah, and Ben), (granddaughter Robin Doyland and husband Joseph with great grandchildren Allison and Michael), (granddaughter Marisa Jerkovich and husband Matthew with great grandson Jack, brothers Meredith and Bob Madden and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gerald is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Richard and his sister Dorothy Donaldson.

Gerald was very giving of his time and enjoyed helping people through many of his volunteer activities, especially bringing people together for retiree functions. He was very proud of his family and frequently expressed his great appreciation and love for all the care provided to him by his wife and children.

A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Rev. Lawrence Santos, Celebrant. Burial will follow at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
