Giovanni ("John") Cargasacchi
(December 24, 1927 – August 15, 2023)
Giovanni ("John") Cargasacchi passed away on August 15, 2023, at the age of 95.
John was born December 24, 1927, in Indovero, Provincia Lecco, Lombardy, Kingdom of Italy to Pietro and Teresa (née Pasquini) Cargasacchi. He was an only child. He lived in the adjacent village, Narro, and immigrated to the United States in 1939 at the age of 12. He met Clementina ("Tina") Dei Rossi at an Italian Catholic Federation function in Santa Barbara. John and Tina were married 54 years until her passing in June of 2015. He was father to five children: Theresa, Peter, John, Laura, and Mark.
John was a devoted son, husband, father, lifetime scholar, and farmer. A UC Berkeley graduate, John enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm for history (as well as his Italian culture) with all who would listen. Having been raised during the Great Depression in post-WWI Italy, he learned frugality and developed a strong work ethic leading to his success in real estate investments. He was a dedicated farmer who farmed locally over eighty years, and as he aged, John found himself acquiring pet cows, pigs, and dogs whom he called his "little friends," enjoying their company as he slowed down. He retired from Johns-Manville in 1983 after 29 years in the laboratory.
John is survived by four of his children: Peter Cargasacchi, John (Paula, and grandsons, John Carlo and Adam) Cargasacchi, Laura (Roy) Belluz, and Mark (Ian) Cargasacchi. John is also survived by his cousins of Indovero, Narro, and Mandello del Lario, Italy. He was predeceased by his daughter, Theresa; parents, Pietro and Teresa; and his wife, Clementina. John will be greatly missed.
Our family wishes to extend our deepest appreciation to Superior Hospice who helped make his final days comfortable We are also deeply thankful and indebted to his caregivers, Irene and Diane, who compassionately cared for John.
