Obituary

Glenn was born May 21, 1916 in Lompoc, CA to Milton and Blanche (McClure) Schuyler. He passed away peacefully on November 4, 2009 at Lompoc Valley Medical Center after a three-year pulmonary illness. He was 93 years old.

Glenn's mother died when he was eight years old, leaving his father, Milton, to raise his five children. Glenn spent his entire life in Lompoc and attended local schools. He loved sports and played center for the Lompoc Braves basketball team, was on the track team and baseball team. He graduated from Lompoc High School in 1935, and then began farming with his father in the North East side of Lompoc along the Santa Ynez River. In the 1950's, he and his brothers owned and operated Schuyler Brothers Registered Hereford Ranch.

His father taught his sons at an early age to fish and hunt. Glenn and his brothers, Darrell and William, along with their father, fished for steelhead in the Santa Ynez River. They also went hunting in Nevada, Arizona and many parts of California. Glenn's two trophy bucks were his pride and joy. While the family home was on East Ocean Ave, a familiar and well-known display in a window at Christmas time was of the biggest buck head decorated with a Santa hat and beard. In later years, a common pastime was fishing with family and friends at Cachuma, Montana de Oro, the Rogue River in Oregon, and VAFB.

In 1941 Glenn married Thelma George of Santa Barbara and together they raised three children. They were married for 58 years until Thelma's passing in 1999.

Glenn was a charter member of the Lompoc Model T Club, a past member of the Lompoc Sportsman Association, The Cotillion Club, former 4-H leader, past President of the Tri-Counties Hereford Association and past President of the Lompoc Pioneer Society.
In 1954, Glenn was elected to the Lompoc City Council, serving two terms and retiring from the council in 1962.

Glenn was a long time member of the Vaqueros de los Ranchos (joined in 1952), where he won numerous belt buckles for trap shooting and pitching horseshoes. He was also a member of the Lompoc Valley Club, Lompoc High School Alumni Association, and a Board member of The Lompoc Valley Historical Society. He was a 63-year member and past Noble Grand of the Lompoc Odd Fellows Lodge and was inducted into the Lompoc High School Hall of Fame in 1998.

He worked twice a week at the Lompoc Historical Fabing McKay Spanne House, maintaining the yard and buildings and giving tours to third grade classes from local schools. Glenn has been featured on two of the historical murals in town, which include the blacksmith shop mural and the Santa Ynez River fishing mural.

Glenn was an avid fan of rodeo, NASCAR, the Lakers, Dodgers and Angels, and enjoyed watching them on TV. He was also a supporter of the Lompoc Braves.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Debbie (Barry) Manfrina of Lompoc, Jack (Cheryl) Schuyler of Solvang and Lorraine (C.T.) Richardson of Lompoc; granddaughters Kim (Jeff) Adams of Solvang, Traci (Sean) McMahan of Paso Robles, Donica (Larry) Moir of Greeley, CO and Jodi (George) Torres of Lompoc; sister Lucille Harman of Stockton; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Thelma, sister Frances Buckmaster and brothers Darrell and William Schuyler.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, November 11th at 11:00am at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lompoc Valley Historical Society, PO Box 88, Lompoc, CA 93438 or Marian Homecare, 504 East Plaza Dr, Santa Maria, CA 93454.
